I am the first to admit that history in school was not my best subject, no it was probably worse than that, I was completely uninterested ... At the same time I admit (while I´m into the mood of confession, I mean) that I´m a emotional person, and why do I tell you this?
Becuase my newly discovered interest in history has just to do with it, I need to experience, to feel the history in place, as I discovered when I was in China this summer. Fun to go to China and shop, was my attitude before the trip. But when I went to the "The Forbidden City" (to have been in China and only done shopping seemed only too superficial) in this historical place and had the chance to ask my questions (with the risk of seeming completely stupid, given my poor knowledge in Chinese history), I just wanted to know more and more, the guide was probably glad I only took 1 hour guided tour ...
The same thing happened now when we we visited Ho Chi Minh City, we crawled in the tunnels in Cu Chi (the most densely bombed area during the war) where the Vietnamese built tunnels, in order to escape U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War. Perhaps even stronger is the feeling I still carry with me from the "War Remnants Museum" where photos from the war and its incredible devastation is shown, the photos were so strong that I was feeling sick.
